Volume is about how strongly you project your thoughts and emotions into the world. Joanna Strogats turned her volume up at age 12 by recording a cover of 'Jolene' and allowing it to be sent out — putting her voice into the world without knowing what would come back. Before the letter, that volume was tentative and untested. After Dolly's response validated it, something in her relationship to her own voice shifted. She stopped being someone who just wondered whether her voice mattered and became someone who had evidence that it did.
