Volume controls how strongly someone projects themselves outward. Tim Lopez had his volume cranked — he was performing constantly, making everything about his jokes and his identity as the class comedian. After Renneka called him out on the playground, he deliberately turned the volume down. He backed off, toned down his act, and stopped making himself the loudest thing in the room. That quieter version of him is what eventually got her attention.
