Privacy is the core setting in this story. Janelle Monáe spent years carefully controlling how much of herself she revealed — not out of dishonesty, but out of genuine need for safety and readiness. She didn't flip the switch all at once. She moved it incrementally, album by album, as she built community and felt safer.
