Brightness
How much light you bring to what you're looking at. Controls whether you see the hopeful side or the dark side of a situation.
Sayre Quevedo and the Barbershop Across the Street
Brightness controls whether someone tilts toward the hopeful or the dark reading of a situation. Sayre Quevedo had deliberately dimmed this setting for years — deciding at age 20 that it 'wasn't cool' to still feel hurt about his father, and choosing to feel nothing instead. When he stood across the street from the barbershop and watched his father work, the dimness gave way slightly: he admitted the hurt was real, and also that there was something clarifying about seeing the man just living his ordinary life. He moved from actively suppressing feeling to letting a small amount of honest light in.
