Parental Controls

Whether you give yourself the option to choose who you are, instead of just defaulting to how you were raised.

Danielle Lucum and the Masked Man at the Foot of Her Bed

Medium fit

Parental Controls is about whether you choose who you are, or just default to how you were raised. Danielle Lucum had been running on inherited defaults her whole life — the appeasement pattern, the people-pleasing, the tendency to disappear into someone else's needs, all modeled directly from watching her mother. She even repeated the pattern in her first serious relationship at 18, with a controlling boyfriend she molded her entire life around. The assault became the moment she looked at those defaults and said: I don't want to be who I was before. She didn't just survive the attack — she rejected the inherited programming that had shaped her for 30 years.
