Protest Behavior

What you do when you feel disconnected from someone important. Silent treatment, picking fights, testing them, withdrawing affection. These are bids for connection disguised as conflict.

Charles Barkley's Draft Day Eating Binge

High fit

Protest Behavior captures the actions a person takes when they feel powerless or disconnected from a situation that matters to them — bids for control disguised as something else. Charles Barkley, unable to vote on his own draft destination and insulted by the $75,000 salary figure, turned food into a form of protest: three days of Grand Slam breakfasts at Denny's pushed him from 283 pounds back up to 299, deliberately past the Sixers' weight threshold. The gauge moved from passive compliance to active sabotage — Barkley could not change the system, so he used the one lever he actually controlled to send a signal the organization couldn't miss.
