Bob Byrd and the Broken Mermaid
Rupture & Repair is the central mechanism of this story. Bob Byrd, believing he had committed an unforgivable act by shattering the statue, fled the house — the rupture was total, with Bob convinced the bond itself was destroyed. His mother's decision to crawl through mud in her dress to reach him behind the shed, and then verbally separate the broken object from the unbroken relationship, moved the repair dial from zero back to full. The connection did not resume on its own; it required a deliberate, physical act of return and a clear statement that the break was in the porcelain, not the bond.
