Anti-Alias is about resisting the urge to flatten things into binaries and allowing for nuance and complexity. Dolly Parton operated in a world that insisted on a single version of her: the joke, the boobs, the persona. But the actual person was writing songs about asylum commitment, stillbirth, suicide, and female rage. Dolly held both — the rhinestones and the darkness — without collapsing one into the other. She didn't make people choose between the diva and the songwriter. She just kept being both.
