The Custody Mother and the Question of Good Enough
Anti-Alias is about resisting the urge to flatten things into simple binaries. The world was offering her a very binary read: you have custody equals good mother, you don't have custody equals bad mother. The caller was beginning to switch on Anti-Alias by asking whether the reality of her relationship with her son — the FaceTimes, the visits, the connection — could exist outside that rigid binary. She was starting to let the edges blur, to hold a more nuanced picture of what her parenthood actually looked like.
