Parental Controls is about whether you give yourself the option to choose who you are, instead of just defaulting to how your environment shaped you. Lebohang Mohashwa grew up in a village where being different got you labeled and shunned, and he internalized the pressure to perform a version of boyhood that didn't fit him. The pageants were his attempt to override those defaults — to be chosen on his own terms — but the further he went, the more the structure of the pageants just reinstalled the same rules. His mother's words after his breakdown were the override: you tried, you can cry, now choose something else. That permission to choose a different path instead of keep proving himself in the wrong arena is Parental Controls being turned down.
