Parental Controls
Whether you give yourself the option to choose who you are, instead of just defaulting to how you were raised.
Janet McNamara and the Autism Diagnosis
Parental Controls are about whether you get to decide who you are instead of defaulting to how others have defined you. Janet McNamara had been defined by other people's labels her whole adult life: rude, difficult, bad tone. She had even partially accepted those definitions, trying to force herself to make small talk and say hi to people. Getting the diagnosis was the moment she switched Parental Controls off — she stopped letting the workplace's definition of 'normal' be the default setting for who she was supposed to be.
