Eve Engel and the First Kiss That Wasn't Perfect
Cognitive Restructuring is precisely what Eve Engel's counselor delivered in a single sentence. Eve had been operating under the belief that a carefully planned first kiss should feel perfect, and when it didn't, she concluded she had done something wrong. Her counselor's correction — 'first kisses are supposed to be awkward, first everythings are supposed to be awkward' — replaced the distorted standard (planned = perfect) with a more accurate one (awkward is normal). Eve's behavior shifted directly as a result: the person who could not initiate a kiss because conditions had to be perfect later kissed someone spontaneously on a subway platform.
