Radical Acceptance

Accepting reality as it is without fighting it.

Ivan Lowe and the Fear of Actually Having a Future

High fit

Radical Acceptance involves accepting reality as it is without fighting it. Ivan Lowe had organized his entire coping system around the expectation of early death — refusing to plan, refusing to imagine a future — because accepting that he might live felt more threatening than accepting that he might die. Therapy moved him from a closed position (a long future does not apply to me) toward a cracked-open one: he stopped actively rejecting the possibility. As he describes it, the terror of living is real, but he stopped closing the door on it completely, which is the observable behavioral change.
