Ivan Lowe and the Fear of Actually Having a Future

Medium fit

Cognitive Restructuring appears in Ivan Lowe's therapy-aided revision of the belief that a long future simply did not apply to him. Having spent years operating on the assumption of imminent death — first from leukemia, then from repeated near-misses in Afghanistan — Ivan had locked in a short-term-only mental frame that filtered out any planning or hope beyond the next day. Therapy began moving that frame: Ivan started to acknowledge, tentatively, that surviving was not an anomaly to be ignored but a reality that required him to update his operating assumptions about his own timeline. He did not fully complete the restructuring, but the belief that 'I am someone who dies young' was at least partially revised toward 'I may actually have a future.'
