Exposure

Gradually facing feared situations to reduce avoidance and build tolerance.

Ivan Lowe and the PTSD He Didn't See Coming

High fit

Exposure is the operational core of the EMDR sessions Ivan Lowe undertook with his therapist for PTSD symptoms stemming from war-zone trauma. Rather than avoiding the memory of standing on a corpse in Kabul, Ivan was guided to voluntarily re-enter the scene — describing the texture of rubble underfoot, the weather, the visual details — and remain in that heightened emotional state under therapeutic supervision. The sessions were repeated across many appointments, progressively extending the duration Ivan could tolerate the memory before being pulled out. Over time, the goal was for the memory's capacity to trigger the same automatic fear response to diminish through sustained, controlled contact.
