Parental Controls
Whether you give yourself the option to choose who you are, instead of just defaulting to how you were raised.
Jessica Wheeler and Leaving the Mormon Church
Parental Controls is about whether you get to choose who you are instead of just defaulting to how you were raised. Jessica Wheeler had never been given that choice — the church was the air she breathed from birth. Her entire identity, her goals, her definition of a good life, were handed to her before she could evaluate them. Leaving the church was the first time she actually chose her own values rather than inheriting them. The fear she felt — 'who am I without Mormonism?' — was the sound of those parental controls being switched off for the first time.
