Esther McManus and the Call from Julia Child
Language & Region is about openness to engaging across cultures and lived experiences. Esther McManus didn't just learn French baking technique — she carried an entirely different food culture, rooted in Morocco and Jewish tradition, into a world defined by European culinary standards. She wrote her letter to Julia Child in French. She described her croissants in the language of the tradition they came from. Rather than hiding her background to fit in, she led with it — and it turned out to be exactly what made her work distinctive.
