Parental Controls
Whether you give yourself the option to choose who you are, instead of just defaulting to how you were raised.
Esther Ngumbi and the Ear Piercing
Parental Controls is about whether you simply default to how you were raised, or whether you choose who you want to be. For most of her early life, Esther Ngumbi was pushing against her mother's controls — resenting them, trying to bypass them. After the conversation, she didn't just comply with her mother's rules. She chose to internalize a version of them for her own reasons. She made the decision herself, on her own terms. That's not just following the parent — that's the switch flipping over to self-directed.
